Some Internet Marketing Terminology Explained.......... What is a niche?

What is a niche?

I will talk a lot about niches in this blog but what is a niche? A niche is a small part of a topic or subject. A car market is a niche: that is a niche where all people are interested in cars. Mercedes is a sub niche from the main niche (a niche within a niche), as it is a manufacturer of cars. You can keep digging deeper into a niche: a yellow Mercedes would be another sub niche of the Mercedes niche. A yellow Mercedes with yellow leather chairs (digging deeper again) would be a micro niche in that sub niche. In this book I will sometimes talk about sub niches and micro niches that have the potential to make money. I will simply call it “niche” throughout this blog.

Recap:
Market or niche: Car
Sub niche: Mercedes
Micro Niche: Yellow Mercedes
Here’s another example:
Market or niche: Tennis
Sub niche: Serving
Micro Niche: Serving left-handed

The internet is ideal for finding niche markets. You can join groups, forums, communities, chat sites and social websites and talk about your niche, sub niche or micro niche. In “the olden days” you would have to go to exhibitions, join clubs, phone people or write thousands of letters in order to find people who love yellow Mercedes’. All you need to do these days is Google Yellow Mercedes and it’s likely that you will find potential customers. And the extra bonus? You can sell to people all over the world.
Why are micro niches of significant importance? Research has proven that when people do not immediately find what they want on a site, they will leave it. Take our example of Mercedes: a searcher types in “yellow Mercedes” and comes across the site that has not focused on the keywords yellow Mercedes. He sees all red, black and blue cars and leaves the site. The next site he comes across shows four pictures all with a Yellow Mercedes. He will no doubt have a look on the site because he knows that it contains relevant information.
The longer he stays on your site, the more chance there is that he clicks one of your money-making links. That’s exactly what you will be doing when you have read this blog: building a site on yellow Mercedes (using our example) and filling it with content that can earn you money. For instance, you’ll sell books on yellow Mercedes, sell DVDs about yellow Mercedes, sell a miniature yellow Mercedes, sell yellow paint for a yellow Mercedes and so on. And no, you do not have to stock or ship any of these products, that’s the beauty of affiliate marketing (see a bit further).

Here are some more examples of niches, just so you get the picture: piano players, twin mums, translators, model train builders, yoga trainers.

Sub-niches would be: standing-up piano players, twin mums over 40, Spanish translators, and so on.
